Brett Schumette, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, stated that the European Commission is improperly attempting to expand its regulatory authority to include U.S. companies within its jurisdiction and to control American innovation and economic growth engines. The European Commission's decision to impose the fine was made last December and has since become a focal point in the increasingly strained transatlantic relationship between Europe and the U.S.
