Google plans to launch an experimental satellite next week via SpaceX's Transporter-18 mission, developed in collaboration with Planet, to send its self-developed AI chips into low Earth orbit for the first time. The satellite, equipped with four Google Trillium TPU chips, will run the Gemini model in orbit to explore extending AI computing power from ground data centers to space. However, James Manyika, Google's Senior Vice President of Research, stated that the current phase of the mission focuses on verifying the chips and hardware's resilience in the space environment, with heat dissipation remaining a major challenge. The satellite must shut down to cool after approximately 15 minutes of full-power operation each time.
