Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko stated that the industry is "not ready" for Alpenglow, a radical new consensus upgrade for the Solana blockchain designed to drastically reduce block finality time from approximately 12.8 seconds to 100-150 milliseconds. Anza engineers have successfully migrated Solana's devnet to the new Alpenglow consensus protocol. The upgrade replaces the TowerBFT algorithm with the Votor voting system, whose main innovation is moving validator coordination off-chain, thereby freeing up to 75% of block capacity for user transactions and reducing costs for node operators. Alpenglow has now been released on public clusters for dApp testing, with the mainnet integration timeline yet to be announced.
