U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said on Sunday that the U.S. had offered to sell uranium to Tehran for its civilian nuclear program as part of previous negotiations aimed at ending the war with Iran, but Iran rejected the offer. Waltz stated that the Trump administration was open to allowing Iran to retain a civilian nuclear program, provided Iran agreed to comply with international law and its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). He noted that the agreement would have been similar to the one reached with the United Arab Emirates, where the UAE agreed not to produce enriched uranium domestically or reprocess spent fuel itself. Currently, Iran is estimated to possess over 440 kilograms (970 pounds) of uranium enriched to 60%, while uranium for nuclear weapons is enriched to approximately 90%.
