Goldman Sachs' Carbonomics team released a report on September 27, stating that due to severely lagging grid expansion, the "behind-the-meter" (BTM) power generation model for data centers is moving from the fringe to the mainstream. It is projected to meet 25% of global data center electricity demand by 2030, a significant increase from nearly zero in 2025. The report substantially raised its forecast for global data center BTM capacity from 40GW to 67GW. Concurrently, the gas turbine market is facing a comprehensive supply shortage, with GE Vernova's order backlog plus reserved capacity reaching 116GW, its entire 2030 capacity sold out, and over 50% of its 2031 capacity already sold. Goldman Sachs believes that alternative solutions such as fuel cells and reciprocating engines are gaining favor, while Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are the only scalable permanent solution for post-2030.
