The New York City Council on Monday issued a subpoena to Elon Musk, demanding that he or other representatives from SpaceXAI testify in an investigation into artificial intelligence safety risks. The City Council stated that the investigation will assess whether rapidly emerging public safety, cybersecurity, economic stability, privacy, consumer, and business risks necessitate immediate legislative action to protect New New Yorkers. The hearing is scheduled for October 5, with all 51 council members expected to attend. SpaceXAI was formed in February this year through the merger of Musk's rocket company SpaceX and AI company xAI. It currently owns the X platform and the Grok chatbot, with an estimated valuation of $2 trillion. The company has recently faced multiple lawsuits, including a consumer protection lawsuit from the City of Baltimore and a class-action lawsuit filed by teenagers, due to Grok generating non-consensual deepfake pornography.
