Former U.S. Commerce Secretary Raimondo: AI will ultimately create jobs, but I am concerned about large-scale layoffs in the early stages.
Former U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo expressed optimism about AI's long-term job creation potential but voiced concerns that, without proper planning, AI could first trigger widespread layoffs. She warned this could lead to a deep economic recession, long-term unemployment, and even social unrest. Raimondo cautioned that without advance planning, the U.S. unemployment rate could rise to 10-11% within the next three to four years, with youth unemployment potentially reaching 20%. She co-founded Raise Us with former Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, an organization aimed at connecting private capital with government to provide solutions for workers to address potential AI impacts. It currently partners with companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and AMD, as well as four states.
