Ultium Cells, the battery joint venture between LG Energy Solution and General Motors, announced on Monday that it will upgrade its Tennessee plant to produce a new generation of electric vehicle batteries aimed at reducing costs and increasing the energy density of future GM EVs. The plant is expected to be the first in the world to mass-produce lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic batteries, which offer approximately 33% higher energy density than existing lithium-ion batteries.
