According to a multi-year investigation by Kevin Roose, a journalist for The Atlantic, Dario Amodei, a key member of OpenAI, led seven core members to resign in December 2020 and founded Anthropic. The reason was Amodei's loss of trust in OpenAI's management (especially Sam Altman) and his opposition to the company's direction of commercializing AGI. The root of the split can be traced back to OpenAI's "Countries Plan" in 2017, which considered selling the rights to future AGI technology, as well as Altman's actions regarding client lists, Microsoft investment negotiations, and business decisions over the subsequent three years, which led Amodei to believe Altman was "two-faced and manipulative." When Amodei's team left, OpenAI remotely locked their devices and revoked their access. Five years later, Anthropic has become a strong competitor to OpenAI, but according to sources, Amodei and Altman still "despise each other" to this day.
