Microsoft's official X account was hijacked to promote a fraudulent cryptocurrency, Clippy Token.
Microsoft's official X account was hijacked by unknown attackers who leveraged the tech giant's massive social media reach, combined with nostalgic elements of its classic virtual assistant Clippy, to promote a fraudulent cryptocurrency token. The attackers promoted the alleged $Clippy token by retweeting related accounts, which have since been suspended by the X team. The attack was also accompanied by a clever nostalgic trick: Microsoft had previously promised to bring Clippy back if it received 500,000 likes, thereby enticing users to follow the fraudulent token. The material notes that in June 2024, Microsoft India's X account was also hacked to promote a GameStop crypto presale.
