Ukraine's state-owned railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, stated that Russian drones have been increasingly targeting Ukrainian passenger trains since late last year. Since the full-scale invasion in 2022, a total of 521 Ukrzaliznytsia locomotives have been hit, with nearly 60% of these incidents occurring this year. In September alone, 5,831 trains were forced to evacuate due to Russian drone attacks, resulting in an average of 205 train cancellations per day. The Russian Ministry of Defense denies targeting Ukrainian civilians, claiming its strikes are aimed at railway infrastructure used for transporting military personnel and equipment. Ukrzaliznytsia CEO Oleksandr Pertsovskyi noted that some of Russia's latest drones are equipped with AI tools and image recognition capabilities, enabling them to hit moving targets.
