Piero Cipollone, a member of the European Central Bank's (ECB) Executive Board, stated that the digital euro and tokenization are part of the ECB's comprehensive strategy to maintain the central bank's currency at the core of the digital age. He noted that in retail payments, this means preparing for the digital euro; in wholesale markets, it means ensuring central bank money is available for settling tokenized transactions through Project Pontes, and collaborating with the market to shape a broader digital financial ecosystem through Project Appia. Cipollone emphasized that these initiatives aim to provide European market participants with the infrastructure needed for innovation, growth, and maintaining international competitiveness in response to the increasing digitalization of payments and finance, while ensuring the unity, trust, and stability of the monetary system.
