Bulgarian President Rumen Radev announced that two commercial vessels were attacked by drones in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone waters around 3:00 AM local time on Tuesday (00:00 GMT). One of the ships, the Togo-flagged "Alfa Watan," sank, and several people were injured. Radev condemned the attack as "absolutely unacceptable" and a blatant violation of international and maritime law. Bulgarian authorities have launched a large-scale search and rescue operation for the missing crew members. The other vessel, the Palau-flagged "Able," caught fire after the attack, and all 18 crew members were evacuated. Two sailors sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized. Radev noted that Black Sea shipping is being severely affected by the expanding drone attacks related to the Russia-Ukraine war, leading to further increases in insurance costs and making shipping exceptionally difficult.
