As frontier technologies are increasingly viewed as national security issues, AI companies are are racing to build relationships with the U.S. government. Anthropic has appointed at least two former Donald Trump administration officials this year, including former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Chris Liddell to its board of directors, and Sihao Huang, former Senior Policy Advisor for AI and Emerging Technologies at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), as Head of Frontier Compute Strategy. OpenAI has also hired at least three former Donald Trump administration officials, including Thomas Lind, former Head of AI Policy at the Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD), and Dean Ball, former Senior Policy Advisor at OSTP, to roles such as Cyber and Strategic Risk, and Strategic Futures, respectively.
