UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif al-Shamsi stated on Friday via the state news agency WAM that the co-pilot who attempted to hijack a Flydubai passenger plane on September 30 planned a suicide attack, intending to crash the aircraft into Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, Israel, with his plan "inspired by the 9/11 attacks." Al-Shamsi said the 29-year-old suspect admitted to acting alone and prepared himself physically and mentally by watching "terrorist" propaganda materials and attending boxing classes. Investigations revealed that the suspect had familiarized himself with the route and airport on two previous flights to Tel Aviv, and his extremist tendencies first emerged in 2017 while studying in Australia. On September 30, after Flight FZ1073 departed from Dubai, the co-pilot stabbed the Indian captain, Smit Machchhar, in the cockpit, after which the plane rapidly descended 17,000 feet. Passengers and crew eventually subdued the co-pilot, and two relief pilots took control of the aircraft, landing safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
