US Department of Justice officials announced the detention of Álvaro Pulido, 62, on Sunday, who was wanted for allegedly laundering over $2 billion in connection with Venezuelan government bribery schemes. Pulido was arrested during a Homeland Security Task Force operation, though details of his custody were not provided. He had been jailed in Venezuela since March 2023 on separate charges related to diverting profits from state-run oil company PDVSA. US prosecutors accuse Pulido and four co-defendants of bribing Venezuelan officials to secure contracts for food and medicine, then overcharging the government and laundering profits abroad. The US Drug Enforcement Administration and State Department had offered a $10 million reward for his arrest. Pulido is due to appear in court on Tuesday. This follows the recent guilty plea of Alex Saab, another Colombian businessman tied to the Venezuelan government, on money laundering charges.
