US chip stocks saw an intensified sell-off on Wednesday ET, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) at one point dropping over 4% during intraday trading, poised for its sixth consecutive daily decline, the longest losing streak since May 2025. Media reports indicate that as concerns over rising interest rates, high valuations, and the escalating costs of AI infrastructure accumulate, the total market capitalization of SOX components faces the risk of evaporating over $1 trillion. Over the past six trading days, the SOX has cumulatively fallen by 10%, with more than half of its components experiencing declines of at least 10%, including Arm's US-listed shares which have dropped nearly 20%. Even strong earnings from semiconductor equipment leader ASML and an upward revision of its full-year sales guidance failed to effectively boost chip stocks, as the market re-evaluates the sustainability of AI investment profitability.
