Last Saturday, Israeli settlers attacked a convoy of French, Belgian, and Polish diplomats near the Palestinian Christian village of Taybeh in the occupied West Bank. According to witnesses and media reports, at least seven masked settlers surrounded the vehicles, demanded identification documents, smashed the windows of a Belgian consulate vehicle, and assaulted Bernard Baudoux, the mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries, France. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot stated that the Belgian Consul General to Palestine, French and Polish diplomats, and Catholic representatives were also among those attacked. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot called on the Israeli government to arrest the attackers and demanded that it "urgently stop this criminal violence and ensure civilian safety." Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar said that the officials' visit to Taybeh was not coordinated with the Israeli military, but he condemned the "serious violence by Israeli rioters" and stated that Israeli police had launched an investigation. The Israeli military also condemned the attack and said it had launched an investigation into the incident, adding that its soldiers were not present at the time of the attack.
