Lebanon asks Iran to appoint new ambassador after expelling previous one
Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri told Al Jazeera that the Lebanese government has asked Iran to appoint a new ambassador to Beirut. This follows Lebanon's revocation of the former Iranian ambassador's accreditation in March and declaring him "persona non grata," citing Tehran's "violation of diplomatic norms." Mitri also stated that Lebanon prevented Iranian planes from landing at Beirut airport to protect them from Israeli attacks. Furthermore, he said that the United States has failed to exert sufficient pressure on Israel to fulfill its obligations under the US-brokered ceasefire agreement signed in June, including withdrawing occupying forces from Lebanese territory. Israel has also refused the International Red Cross access to Lebanese prisoners of war and to provide their list.
