AI Debt Risk Spurs Hedging Wave: "Mag 7" CDS Weekly Average Trading Volume Surges to $9 Billion in September, Protection Costs for Several AI Companies Hit All-Time Highs
Global investors are flocking to the credit default swap (CDS) market to hedge against potential credit risks stemming from the AI infrastructure investment boom. According to Morgan Stanley data, the average weekly trading volume of CDS linked to bonds from Oracle, SpaceX, Google (Alphabet), Amazon, Meta, Broadcom, and NVIDIA surpassed $9 billion in September, up from less than $2 billion in July. Concurrently, the five-year CDS spreads for Meta, NVIDIA, Google, and Amazon have all risen to historical highs. Oracle's CDS spread was reported at 322 basis points on Monday, while SpaceX's climbed to 226 basis points earlier this week. Emerging cloud service provider CoreWeave's five-year CDS spread is approximately 1090 basis points, reflecting market concerns about its credit pressure.
