Hong Kong Financial Secretary Paul Chan warns of financial market risks from geopolitical uncertainties.
Hong Kong Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po stated on Tuesday at the APEC Finance Ministers' Meeting that geopolitical uncertainties pose downside risks to financial markets and called for a prudent approach. He noted that global economic growth is uneven and under pressure, but Asia continues to outpace global growth, supported by technology-related trade and investment. Chan mentioned that Hong Kong's merchandise exports grew by over 40% in the first eight months of this year, and approximately 70% of IPO proceeds came from AI-related companies. However, he warned that overconcentration in AI-related assets could amplify market corrections across sectors and borders, and geopolitical disruptions would also limit fiscal space. He emphasized that managing these risks requires fiscal prudence, vigilant financial regulation, and closer cooperation in information sharing, risk monitoring, and contingency response.
