UK Government Blocks Gaza Family Reunions, Home Office Appeals Court Ruling and Refuses Biometric Exemption
The UK government is preventing Palestinian families in Gaza from reuniting with their relatives in the UK. Despite an Appeals Court ruling on September 30 that these families should be reunited in the UK, the Home Office has appealed the decision and refused to exempt Gaza families from the mandatory biometric information requirement. Since the visa application center in Gaza has been closed since October 2023 and the Rafah crossing has been closed since May 2024, these families are unable to provide biometric information, preventing them from leaving Gaza. Lawyers and rights organizations estimate that approximately 250 to 300 individuals are seeking family reunification through the courts. Furthermore, the Home Secretary announced this month the reopening of the UK resettlement scheme, but this scheme only applies to a small number of vulnerable refugees in Jordan or Lebanon and does not apply to mothers and children trapped in Gaza.
