German gas storage companies warn that the impact of the war in Iran on prices has made it uneconomical and difficult to replenish natural gas inventories in the summer, leaving the country's reserve levels at historical lows before winter. As of October 30, Germany's natural gas reserve level was 61.35%, well below the 80% target set for November 1. Industry association INES called for a review and improvement of the natural gas storage facility filling mechanism and supported the introduction of mandatory obligations for suppliers to ensure reserves for future winters. The EU has also imposed sanctions on Russian natural gas imports due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
