Google has responded to the controversy surrounding the removal of its search feature due to school AI bans, stating that AI Overviews can be re-enabled. Previously, elected officials expressed strong dissatisfaction after Google shut down search access for schools that banned AI. Google stated that its new policy is designed to give schools more options regarding student interaction with AI, noting that the Gemini chatbot, Gemini Notebook, and search features are disabled by default and can be enabled by schools as needed. Chris Phillips, Vice President of Google Education, stated that search and AI have been deeply integrated. Left-wing politicians, including Senator Bernie Sanders and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, criticized Google's move as leveraging its monopoly position to force-feed AI, while former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan also pointed out that this highlights the dangers of "allowing unregulated monopolies to control essential services."
