Research: Data Center Demand Projections Drive ~$5.7B Swing in PJM Capacity Auction Revenue
According to CryptoSlate, Monitoring Analytics, the independent market monitor for PJM, has recalculated the capacity auction for the 2028–2029 delivery year: under a scenario where existing data center electricity demand is retained while projected demand growth from new and expanded data centers is excluded, and all other assumptions remain unchanged, auction revenue drops from approximately $16.4 billion to about $10.7 billion, a difference of roughly $5.7 billion. This is a model scenario difference and cannot be directly equated to an increase in residential electricity bills, nor is it an estimate of the isolated impact of AI.
