On January 1, Japanese media reported, citing a United Nations report, that Tokyo, the capital of Japan, will drop from being the world’s most populous city in 2000 to the third most populous city by 2025. The UN report indicates that the three most populous cities in the world in 2025 will be Jakarta, Indonesia; Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh; and Tokyo. By 2050, the top six most populous cities in the world are projected to be Dhaka, Jakarta, Shanghai, China, New Delhi, the capital of India, Karachi, Pakistan, and Cairo, the capital of Egypt, with Tokyo slipping to seventh place. Tokyo’s total population is projected to decline from 33.4 million in 2025 to 30.7 million. Between 2015 and 2025, while Japan’s total population decreased by approximately 4 million, Tokyo’s population increased by more than 300,000 during this period. (Xinhua News Agency)
