As Affordable Care Act Subsidies Expire, Health Insurance Premiums Will Rise for Over 20 Million Americans
The enhanced subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, designed to reduce the premium burden on enrollees, are set to expire at the end of 2025, and it is estimated that more than 20 million Americans will face higher healthcare costs starting in 2026. Democrats and Republicans have clashed repeatedly over whether to extend these subsidies. Ultimately, the parties failed to reach an agreement before the subsidies expired. The House of Representatives is expected to vote on a related proposal again in January. The expiration of these subsidies primarily affects those who do not receive health insurance through an employer and are ineligible for Medicaid or Medicare, including the self-employed, small business owners, farmers, and ranchers.
