Goldman Sachs: Hedge Funds Net Bought US Stocks for Five Consecutive Days Last Week, Marking the Second Fastest Buying Spree This Year, Driven by a Short Squeeze in the Tech Sector
According to the latest weekly report from Goldman Sachs Prime Brokerage, hedge funds net bought US equities every trading day last week, with the buying pace reaching the second fastest level in the past year (+2.1 standard deviations). The buying was mainly driven by new long positions in single stocks, coupled with short covering in macro products. The information technology sector saw the largest single sector inflow (+1.2 standard deviations), with short covering in software stocks being particularly prominent, a sector that was previously the largest short target in the first half of 2026. This wave of buying showed pro-cyclical characteristics, with 8 out of 11 sectors recording net buying, while real estate, energy, and utilities experienced net selling. Additionally, short positions in US-listed ETFs have seen net reductions for the sixth consecutive week, indicating a continuous contraction in overall market shorting sentiment.
