Google and Fervo Energy signed a 396 MW geothermal power purchase agreement to meet the energy demands of AI data centers.
Google (a subsidiary of Alphabet) signed a 396-megawatt (MW) power purchase agreement (PPA) with geothermal energy company Fervo Energy on September 1, marking the largest enhanced geothermal PPA to date. The agreement aims to leverage Fervo Energy's Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) technology to provide clean, reliable baseload power from its Cape Station project in Utah to Google's AI data centers, with a target start date for power delivery in 2028. This move will help Google meet the growing energy demands of its AI data centers and validate the commercial viability of Fervo Energy's EGS technology.
