GM aims for fully domestic battery supply chain within 2-3 years, investing $900M in new facilities

The company plans to invest $900 million in new battery research facilities, including a 500,000 square-foot cell prototyping building set to open by year-end. GM is collaborating with Peak Energy on sodium-ion battery cells for stationary energy storage, with commercial production expected around 2029, and will apply the same domestic sourcing priority to future EV battery cells. This strategy contrasts with rival Ford, which has faced criticism from the Trump administration for licensing technology from Chinese battery manufacturer CATL.
