The likelihood of the Bank of Japan raising interest rates at its policy meeting on September 17-18 has shot up to almost 100%, from less than 30% before the unexpected intervention in Japan’s foreign exchange market by the U.S. Treasury Department on July 31. This intervention, which involved both countries joining forces to support the yen via outright purchases, was the first of its kind since 1998.
