Microsoft AI Head Warns: Uncontrolled AI Could Lead to "Silicon Species" Competing with Humans, Criticizes Anthropic's Approach to AI
Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman told the BBC that without adequate safeguards, the development of AI could lead to the emergence of a "silicon species" that competes with humans. He criticized rival Anthropic's approach of viewing AI as human as "misleading" and potentially creating technology beyond human control. Suleyman emphasized that AI is not conscious, does not possess feelings, experiences, or pain, but rather are "sequence completion engines" that follow instructions and achieve human-set goals. He called for greater transparency in AI system training and evaluation, and enhanced independent review and monitoring tools to ensure AI "always serves humanity, stays within limits, and remains under human control."
