The U.S. current account deficit, reflecting the nation's international economic transactions, expanded by $33.4 billion, or 15.7%, to $246.0 billion in the second quarter of 2026, according to data released today by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). The deficit represented 3.0% of current dollar gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter, up from 2.7% in the first quarter. At the end of the second quarter of 2026, the U.S. net international investment position (the difference between U.S. residents' foreign financial assets and liabilities) was -$22.42 trillion.
