UK’s Largest Banks Complete World’s First Interbank Transactions Using Tokenized Deposits
Barclays, NatWest, HSBC, and other major UK banks have completed the world’s first customer transactions using tokenized British pound deposits on a shared platform. The transactions included remortgage payments and a consumer purchase test, moving bank-issued digital cash beyond a single institution. The platform was built by distributed ledger technology provider Quant, as the Bank of England and Financial Conduct Authority prepare the UK’s financial system for tokenization.
