Latvia reports escalating border tensions, stating that masked armed individuals from Belarus are assisting migrants in crossing the border and engaging in sabotage.
Latvian Interior Minister Janis Dombrava stated on Tuesday that on Monday, masked armed individuals from the Belarusian side assisted 20 undocumented migrants in attempting to cross the border into Latvia and threatened Latvian soldiers. Dombrava said that the masked individuals then entered Latvia, damaged electrical boxes, stole surveillance cameras, and returned to Belarus, which Latvian officials believe was sabotage orchestrated by Belarus. Experts warn that Belarus has been using migrants as a tool since 2021 to destabilize NATO's eastern flank. In September and October of this year, there have been 12,000 border violations at the Latvian border, matching the total number for all of last year.
