OpenAI Eavesdropping Suspect Booked One-Way Ticket to Saudi Arabia Before Arrest; Prosecutors Allege He is a Partner at a Saudi VC Firm
Federal prosecutors revealed in a newly unsealed court filing that Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi national accused of secretly installing recording devices in an OpenAI executive conference room, had booked a one-way flight from San Francisco to Saudi Arabia for himself, his wife, and another family member before his arrest. Prosecutors stated that Alfozan is a partner at Saudi venture capital firm Raed Ventures, whose website also lists him as an Engineering Lead at OpenAI. The U.S. Department of Justice said Alfozan was arrested on October 9, and OpenAI terminated his employment this month. Prosecutors believe Alfozan has both the means and motive to flee the U.S. if the case were exposed. A former CIA official told CNBC that Raed Ventures is "essentially an arm of the Saudi government."
