TSMC reported record third-quarter profits, up 68.7% year-over-year, exceeding expectations for the sixth consecutive quarter, driven by AI chip demand. However, the booming growth of AI has led to a continuous increase in demand for TSMC's factory production lines, resulting in fierce competition for chip capacity among major clients such as NVIDIA, Apple, Broadcom, and AMD. Sajiv Dalal, TSMC's North America CEO, stated that he receives at least 10 calls daily regarding wafer capacity. Mizuho Securities analyst Jordan Klein noted that the competition is "extremely intense," and capacity constraints could threaten large-scale infrastructure investments and aggressive revenue growth targets in the AI industry. TSMC is increasing capacity by building new fabs in Taiwan, Japan, and Arizona, USA, and plans an additional $100 billion investment in Arizona, bringing the total commitment to $265 billion, but these expansion plans will take several years to come online.
