Morgan Stanley's first-ever chart of 2027 AI capital expenditure flows shows that NVIDIA alone is projected to capture approximately $690 billion out of the $1.58 trillion spent by hyperscale cloud service providers. This amount represents two-thirds of the benefits accrued to the S&P 500, with the remaining 499 constituent companies collectively receiving only about $339 billion. The report indicates that AI capital expenditure will directly drive approximately 25% of S&P 500 sales growth and contribute 78% of the S&P index's earnings growth in 2027. Concurrently, the report reveals that hyperscale cloud service providers have disclosed over $1.1 trillion in uncommenced lease commitments, a form of "synthetic capital expenditure" that is economically equivalent to debt financing. It is anticipated that 2027 will see the largest free cash flow deficit, leading to a significant increase in debt financing pressure. Morgan Stanley also projects that the growth rate of AI capital expenditure will sharply decelerate from approximately 60% in 2027 to about 14% in 2028, and warns that the market may be underestimating the risk of both volume and price declines.
