GlaSSEM, a joint venture between Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Doosan D&T, has had its mass production schedule for glass substrates delayed at least three times. According to The Elec, since equipment suppliers were first notified to prepare inventory in November 2025, the mass production timeline has been pushed from December last year to March this year, then to June, and is currently still undetermined. The direct reason for the delay is that the prototype submitted to a global communication chip client failed reliability tests, requiring re-development and certification. This could push back the construction of the production line to the second half of 2027, further delaying mass production to 2028 or even later. Meanwhile, Japanese manufacturers such as Shinko Electric Industries and DNP are accelerating their glass substrate technology and production line layouts, with DNP also targeting mass production in 2028. This narrows Samsung Electro-Mechanics' competitive window in the AI advanced packaging market.

Simon Penn, a macro strategist at UBS in London, noted in a report released on Monday that Germany's natural gas storage facilities are currently only 48% full, significantly lower than 65% a year ago and 75% during the 2022 energy crisis, reaching their lowest level for this time of year in 17 years. UBS economist Felix Huefner expects Germany's gas storage rate to reach only 65% by November, well below the government's target of 80% and the EU's requirement of 90%. UBS believes that low inventory levels, limited regasification facility capacity, and low Rhine river levels will impose multiple constraints on Germany's restocking efforts. If a severe winter occurs this year, Europe's largest economy could face both soaring natural gas prices and supply shortages, potentially further pushing up eurozone inflation and dragging down German economic growth.

Global bond and stock markets weakened simultaneously, affected by the continuous sell-off of US government bonds, rising oil prices, and escalating geopolitical tensions. Former President Donald Trump stated his intention not to extend the expiring US-Iran agreement, leading to renewed tensions in the Middle East. Brent crude rose 0.6% to $91.45 per barrel, exacerbating market concerns about persistently high inflation. Asian stock markets fell across the board, with both the Nikkei 225 and Korea Composite Stock Price Index dropping 2%. Nasdaq 100 index futures fell 0.7%.
