European Central Bank (ECB) ECB President Lagarde stated that Bulgaria’s accession to the eurozone on Thursday demonstrates Europe’s ability to work together and weather international headwinds.“The euro is a powerful symbol of what Europe can achieve when we work together, and it represents our ability to address current global geopolitical uncertainties through shared values and collective strength,” she said as she welcomed the 21st member of the eurozone. This Balkan nation of 6.4 million people has just completed its economic transition and become the newest member of the world’s largest currency area. This also means that the number of policymakers on the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB) has increased to 27, with Bulgarian Central Bank Governor Radev joining the ranks of interest rate setters.“Joining the eurozone is not merely an economic decision, nor is it simply a choice of currency,” Radev said in a video address. “It is a symbol of belonging—indicating that your place is not on the periphery, but within a space of shared rules, trust, and responsibility. It marks the recognition and acceptance of your efforts.”
