After a senior Israeli minister threatened to “run over” the country’s chief justice, judicial and business institutions in Israel expressed shock over the official’s safety, marking the latest round of conflict between the government and the courts. In an open letter signed by 143 judges—including all living former chief justices—they warned that the government’s actions “pose a threat to the foundations of the nation’s democracy” and expressed concern for “the personal safety of Chief Justice Isaac Amit.” They called on law enforcement agencies to “ensure his safety and well-being, as well as that of all Israeli judges, at all costs.” Earlier this week, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich launched a scathing attack on Amit, calling him “an arrogant, violent, predatory totalitarian who is robbing Israel of its democracy” and vowing that “we will run him over.” He refused to retract his remarks, stating that he “could not express in milder terms the pain and frustration over the Supreme Court’s misdeeds against the government and the people.”
