The "Die With Zero" philosophy encourages retirees to fully enjoy life rather than over-saving, aiming to avoid leaving behind substantial wealth without having accumulated life experiences. This concept, proposed by Skylar Capital founder Bill Perkins, advocates for people to stop accumulating retirement savings and instead use their funds to create memorable life experiences, including donations or gifts, to gain a "memory dividend."
However, some financial advisors warn that achieving "Die With Zero" requires extensive meticulous planning. A 2026 Allianz survey revealed that nearly half (48%) of Americans do not have a written financial plan. Furthermore, a 2025 study in the *Financial Planning Review* found that married households aged 65 withdraw only 2.1% annually from their retirement savings, significantly lower than the widely accepted 4% safe withdrawal rule. Experts note that many retirees spend too conservatively, leading them to hold substantial assets in their later years. Some advisors suggest that purchasing whole life insurance can be part of a "Die With Zero" plan, allowing individuals to enjoy life while also leaving a tax-free inheritance for their heirs.
