Walmart embraces AI agents for shopping with new controls, while Amazon blocks them
Walmart announced on Wednesday the launch of its Agent Gateway and new features to manage transactions for customers using AI agents, differentiating itself from competitors like Amazon, which has started blocking AI agents from making purchases. Walmart's new Agent Profiles, rolling out next month, will allow customers to authorize AI agents with dedicated profiles, set spending limits, and require transaction approvals. The retailer also introduced special terms for AI agents, ensuring they act as intended and do not access customer payment information, with returns processes applicable even if an agent misbehaves. Walmart President and CEO John Furner stated the company is expanding efforts to prepare for a world where AI agents become mainstream, supporting agentic shopping for both Walmart and Sam's Club.
