Canada's top trade negotiator, Dominic LeBlanc, welcomed a shift in the US position that "discoverability," "labelling," and "measures to promote French language and Canadian culture" would not be subject to US tariffs. This comes after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America, and Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion of US goods, set to go into effect on September 8, in response to Washington's 50% tariffs on Canadian goods. US Trade Representative Jamison Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick downplayed the French language dispute, with Lutnick calling the claims "manufactured" and a "complete lie."
