Barclays Report: AI Replacement Wave Overestimated, Only 20% of Core Workplace Skills Highly Replicable, but Amplification Effect Has Spread
Barclays released a research report on September 22, stating that AI's impact on the labor market is much milder than the market narrative suggests, yet more profound. The report indicates that core workplace skills truly highly replicable by AI account for only about 20%, suggesting an overestimation of concerns about a large-scale "replacement wave." However, AI's "amplification effect" on productivity is more widespread, penetrating almost every corner of the labor market. The report also found that since 2022, the share of job postings for occupations with the highest automation exposure has fallen from approximately 30% to around 25%. Concurrently, the share of job postings requiring AI skills has climbed from about 2% in 2019 to 6% to 10% by August 2026, with the focus of AI skill demand shifting from technology and data roles to management positions.
