Pat Gelsinger, General Partner at Playground Global and former Intel CEO, stated in an in-depth interview on a16z that while AI simplifies chip design, physical bottlenecks in manufacturing, memory, and energy are driving an unprecedented hardware renaissance. He warned that the misalignment between stagnant growth in U.S. energy capacity and AI's massive appetite for millions of GPU clusters could lead to a wave of data center defaults due to power shortages. Gelsinger also noted that current HBM memory is "terrible" but the biggest storage innovation in 30 years is imminent, predicting that the AI chip market will eventually consolidate from nearly a hundred companies to a few dominant platforms. He believes optical interconnects will replace copper interconnects in 2028-2029 and is optimistic about new memory technologies such as ferroelectric materials.
