Brazil's benchmark stock index, Bovespa, has risen 12.2% month-to-date, closing at a record high last Friday and marking its largest weekly gain since April 9, 2020. The iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ), which tracks Brazilian equities, has surged nearly 17% this month, with its year-to-date dollar-denominated gains reaching 37%, significantly outperforming the S&P 500. Concurrently, the ETF saw a single-week net inflow of $2.3 billion, pushing its full-year 2026 net inflows to $3.5 billion.

This rally is primarily driven by the results of the first round of Brazil's presidential election. The market widely anticipates that if right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro wins, he will implement fiscal consolidation policies, which are expected to reduce the fiscal deficit, encourage the central bank to cut interest rates, and stimulate economic growth. Financial and energy stocks have benefited first as a result; a JPMorgan Chase report indicates that the Brazilian financial stock index has risen approximately 25% since the first-round election results were announced.

Arjun Jayaraman, Emerging Markets Equity Portfolio Manager at Causeway Capital Management, stated that the sector structure of the Brazilian stock market offers differentiated allocation value and is an effective way to diversify AI trading risks. Even if the AI rally does not fully materialize, the Brazilian stock market, with its significant exposure to the energy sector, can still benefit from domestic economic expansion and potentially gain from global energy supply disruptions caused by the Middle East conflict. JPMorgan Chase strategists also maintain a positive outlook on Brazilian equities, believing that expectations for fiscal improvement have not yet been fully priced in.
